What a tough year it has been for so many. Some people have lost their jobs, others have put theirs on hold and many have had to adapt to working from home. With a turbulent year behind us, what does the future hold for your career? Is it time for a change and what would this look like?

We will be joined by two speakers in this workshop.

The first part of the workshop will provide a safe space to help you (by Tracy Bussoli – Careers Coach):

  • Look at career planning from a different perspective, considering the role of chance in your future career.

  • Reflect upon your values and how these can play out in your career.

  • Reflect on your skills and experience thinking about whether these could translate to an alternative career.

  • Explore the logistics of job hunting today.

For the second part of the workshop, Cathy Sorbara (Neuroscientist) will share her personal experience:

  • Personal experience on career transitioning into different sectors and also different geographic locations

  • What motivated her to make these career moves

  • How she approached these transitions, what worked (and what didn’t!)

  • Networking tips and tricks

  • How to stay motivated when you hit roadblocks and develop personal resilience

Dr Tracy Bussoli is a Careers Coach with thirteen years’ experience of working with a wide range of clients mainly within the context of education, medicine, and scientific research.

She has had many career pivots herself before coming to rest as a Careers Coach. She graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Kent at Canterbury, doing a year in Industry with Shell plc. She went on to do a PhD in the genetics of deafness and was a Postdoctoral Scientist with The Medical Research Council, Institute of Hearing Research. Following this period, she did an MSc in Genetic Counselling and became a Senior Genetic Counsellor within the Clinical Genetics Department at Guy’s Hospital for eight years. Following a two-year period in property developing, whilst her children were young, she did a diploma in executive coaching and became a Careers Coach in 2008. She is a qualified MBTI practitioner and has worked with many career professionals helping them to shape and change careers.

Cathy Sorbara is a neuroscientist and passionate about raising the voices of women! For 10 years she worked as a researcher in academia, studying neurodegenerative diseases. But when she moved to England, Cathy decided to explore a different path. She ran a start-up company called Cheeky Scientist, a global professional network that helps PhDs see their value and find meaningful work outside of academia. She was also Co-Chair of CamAWiSE from 2017-2019.

In 2018 she set sail for Antarctica with 80 other women scientists, as part of Homeward Bound projects, a leadership initiative that aims to heighten the influence and impact of women making decisions that shape our planet. From that point forward, Cathy has dedicated her time towards creating a healthier planet and sustainable future. She currently works at Greenpeace International in the Netherlands as a Project Manager. She is also involved in several volunteer initiatives. She coaches Artivism for Climate Action, an after-school program in Amsterdam as part of Project Fearless for girls ages 9-14. She is also Vice President of Net Impact Amsterdam, a membership association for people that aim to use their professional skills to contribute to a more sustainable society.
