Men as champions of change with Jill Armstrong

Collaborating with Men is ground-breaking research conducted by Murray Edwards College with men to establish how men and women can work together to transform workplace culture barriers to women’s progress into leadership positions. Much research shows how women’s careers are ill-affected by assumptions and behaviour in the workplace that arise from the dominance of masculine culture. Yet, very little research has sought the point of view of men. The research asks men who support gender equality: Do they see the problems women report? What they can personally do to help change the workplace? What support do they need from leaders?

Moving from diversity to inclusion by Dawn Bonfield. Last week to book!

Spend an evening with Dawn Bonfield MBE, who will present her case on Inclusive Engineering making inclusivity unavoidable. This approach ensures diversity will follow and is sustained. The steps include embedding Inclusive Engineering into university curriculums, changing our engineering processes and practices and adopting ‘bias interrupters’.

Dawn is a materials engineer by profession having studied Materials Science and worked in the aerospace industry. Her career spans; AERE Harwell, Citroen Research Centre (Paris), British Aerospace (Bristol), MBDA (Stevenage) and the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (London). She was previously the President and then the first Chief Executive of the Women’s Engineering Society, which works to promote gender equality. She founded, what has become, the International Women in Engineering Day, and the Top 50 influential Women in Engineering with the Daily Telegraph.

In 2016 she received her MBE for ‘Services to the promotion of diversity in engineering’. She now runs Towards Vision, which allows her to progress her own agenda, campaign, lobby, work her own hours and pick her own projects.

Diane Turner – AWiSE member profile

Diane Turner – Owner & Senior Consultant, Anthias Consulting Ltd.
I  started Anthias Consulting in 2005, people were quite sceptical as I was a female under the age of 30 starting a scientific consultancy business!
I studied at the University of Warwick obtaining a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry and received the Andrew McCamley prize for the best final year research project. After a year in industry, I returned to complete a Masters degree in Instrumental and Analytical Methods in Biological and Environmental Chemistry (Pharmaceutical analysis) where I was the only student to get an external 6 month project working at Zeneca Agrochemicals at Jealott’s Hill. At the end of which I had two job offers, to stay at Zeneca or move to ATAS in Cambridge to build an applications laboratory to support the sales of their products in gas chromatography.

With this great opportunity, I of course did the latter and developed that side of the business performing instrument demonstrations, developing applications and training customers. I was there for over 5 years and left to survey coral reefs for a couple of months in Fiji.

I’m a consultant with Science ETC – a Science Education, Training and Communications Consultancy.

I’m also a Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge where I teach pharmacology and maths for biologists part time during term and am Dean (also part time). I also work at the Disability Resource Centre in the University of Cambridge helping students with Specific Learning Difficulties develop their study skills.
