photo

I am a biotechnology scientist with 15 years of research experience in various fields, including Neuroscience, Cancer, Proteo-Gen(omics) etc. I did my Ph.D. research at the Boston Children’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, USA. I worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Merck Pharma, Boston, USA. Currently, I am a Research Scientist at the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge.

Developing the business potential of scientific innovations has been my passion. I have often led my research projects to reach their applied or therapeutic potential and to be used as a tool of innovation and commercialization for better productivity. In addition, I have worked as the Fellow of Commercialization at the Technology Transfer department of the Harvard University. I have co-founded a data-analysis company that is in early proof-of-concept phase.

I am serving in various leadership & management roles in esteemed STEM organizations engaging students, women professionals, and non-scientific public. To name a few, I am a STEM Ambassador (STEMNET), Deputy-Chair (CamAWiSE), Mentor (NYAS), Science Reviewer (AAAS), and in Communications team (Pint of Science). I am an active educator/communicator of science contributing to STEM education/outreach, especially for women.

Winter networking 2016

Speed networking, stories of real-life professional women and mince pies. That could be a recap of the 2016 winter networking, but it was so much more.

During the speed networking, the room was filled with energy as attendees changed partner every five minutes. This allowed everybody to make more contacts and to hone their networking skills.

End of a five minutes segment.

After the networking, several members of the steering group talked about their professional careers. Although they all had different paths they all stressed the importance of doing what you enjoy and not what you are supposed to do

For all of them, CamAWiSE was very important in different stages of their career as a friendly and supportive group. Indeed, CamAWiSE is a good place to connect with professional women who share similar experiences, gain skills and increase your confidence.

Profile: Azu Hatch – chartered holistic building design engineer

AzuCambridge AWiSE Steering Group member – Azu Hatch CEng MIMechE AMIOA

I am a chartered holistic building design engineer, STEM ambassador, wife and mother.  I have a background in mechanical services (air conditioning, ventilation, heating) with a specialism in acoustics and a keen interest in sustainability.

I spent my formative professional years at Arup and Arup Acoustics in London, Edinburgh and Melbourne – a recruitment agent once spent 5 minutes on the phone marvelling at how anyone could be at the same company for 16 years!  More recently I have been a project engineer at University of Cambridge spin off company Breathing Buildings, who design and make low energy natural ventilation systems.  Last year, circumstances forced me into going self-employed, and at Cambridge Architectural Research I have found myself back surrounded by some of the greatest brains around.   I contribute to projects ranging from architecture, structure, seismic risk and energy use, producing CAD drawings, report input and analyses of data.
